Repair Rusty Brake Line Leak

Please save the bitching, I know this is does not fall in the catagories of a good or safe fix, but sometimes the car you are working on just isnt worth the. '02 Olds Alero, 3.7. I found out a lot of my high pressure lines are rusted to shit in a certain place, and the brakes are leaking to the point.

There's a hole in one of the metal brake lines and so it's leaking brake fluid now. It works if i just keep refilling the fluid, but it still leaks. Is there a temporary fix I can do to the hole so it won't leak (or at least leak less) until I'm able to get it replaced (in about a week or two)? Thanks There's a hole in one of the metal brake lines and so it's leaking brake fluid now. It works if i just keep refilling the fluid, but it still leaks.

Is there a temporary fix I can do to the hole so it won't leak (or at least leak less) until I'm able to get it replaced (in about a week or two)? Best Answer: NEVER use any rubber hose for a brake repair. The actual correct fix is about the same cost as the rubber hose and clamps would cost.

What you need is a piece of pre crimped brake line, close to the size of the repair required. Also get yourself a flaring tool - pretty cheap. Like 10.00 cut the bad section of line out - making sure to leave enough so your fix can be put in there. Now put the barrel and nut on the cut side - and flare it.

Do the same on the other cut end. Then put your pre flared repair line in there and bolt it on tight. There are two ways to fix this temporarily. The first is to get a piece of fuel injection hose.

Cut it long enough to overlap the hole by a half an inch. Slit the piece of hose long ways and slip it over the brake line so the slit is on the opposite side of the leak. Use 3 hose clamps, tighten one on either side of the leak, and one over the leak. This will nearly stop the leak and might hold for a week.

The other way is to cut the leaking part out of the brake line and install a ferrule union to rejoin the brake line. This works for quite a bit longer, but should not be used as a permanent fix because of the high pressure of the hydraulic brake line. There are NO TEPPORARY FIXES for metal brake lines!!!

The only repair is to replace the whole line from where it starts to where it ends. If where it is leaking is easy to get to and work around, you can cut the line and using a flareing tool and do a double flare and using a brass union to connect a new small piece of new metal line with fittings already on them.

You can not use a rubber hose clamped over the metal line, the first time you hit the breaks, it will pop right off, and if you cut the metal line you will have to bleed the brakes. You must do it right the first time!!! All of these suggestions are crap, because there is no way you can fix a brake line with duct tape, rubber hoses, clamps, or any other of the lame quick fixes listed here. Your brakes must be fixed by someone who knows what the hell they are doing, and only by replacing hoses and metal brake lines with exact replacements, because if you rear-end me and my family because you tampered with your brakes, I will be very upset.

Brakes are the most critical safety feature on your car, and one that can kill you if they don't work. Words cannot describe how stupid the ideas here are. I seriously hope anyone here who follows any of these ideas hits a telephone pole and doesn't hurt anyone but themselves.
