First, see the Sears parts site for your washer: and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts. Also see the Whirlpool / Kenmore Service Manual for these washers. The most likely culprits are the Water Level or Water Temperature switches.

You say the cold water hose works on the hot water side? Or did you mean you've already eliminated the possible problem of new hoses? If that is the case, it's definately water inlet valve. Sounds like you have a blockage in the screen (check that for me).
If there's no lint stuck in the hot water screen, then you need to replace the inlet valve. It's possible the solenoid of the inlet valve on the hot side is stuck shut only allowing the cold to fill. Before you buy a new valve, take the old one out and play around with it.
The plunger like solenoids will come off and you can check for debirs in there. If there's debris, clean it out and try the cycle again. If there's not debris, the part needs to be replaced. You will need to get behind the washer, turn the water off, disconnect the hose from the washer, look for a screen inside the water valve, hopefully there is one that you can clean if necessary. I always put the hose over in the washer and turn the water on to check the flow. If the screens on both hot and cold are clear, water flow is good on both hot and cold, connect the water back to the washer.
