The early Suikoden titles on the PlayStation are some of the most memorable role playing games to date. Despite this, Western fans of the series missed out on two additional Japanese exclusive releases which link up with the second Suikoden story - visual novels known as Genso Suikogaiden - the first of which has just been translated into English.
The visual novel genre is quite an odd one for video games, one rarely seen outside of Japan. On paper the thought of reading on screen dialogue and doing little other than pressing through text and making the occasional path changing decision doesn't really make for great gaming. Having said that there are some fantastic, atmospheric and deep visual novel video games out there such as the timeless Chrono series outing,, or even the more recent series on the Nintendo DS (to a degree). Genso Suikogaiden is a two part spin-off from the main Suikoden series first found on the Sony PlayStation, consisting of Suikogaiden Volume 1: Swordsman of Harmonia and Volume 2: Duel at Crystal Valley.
